Due to seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, most pianos need tuning at least twice a year; more with heavy use. In the winter the air gets cold and dry which shrinks the wood and causes the strings to relax and go flat. In the spring and summer the opposite occurs when increased humidity causes the wood to swell and stretch the strings sharp.
